Chapter 6: Beast from the Air

The beast descended from the skies and welcomed the boys with more fear

Plot of Chapter
Vocabulary
  • A military airplane was flying over the island and a figure dangled and flew to the top of the mountain

  • SamnEric mistake the dead parachuter for the beast and rushed to the shelters to wake up the boys

  • Ralph and Jack explored a newly discovered cave but find nothing

  • Jack and the boys wanted to make a fort but Ralph reminded the boys of the fire

GUANO (115): natural manure composed of dead sea birds

("...pink, tumbled boulders with guano layered on them like icing..."

LEVIATHAN (115): any huge marine animal, a sea monster

("Then the sleeping leviathan breathed out...")

MUTINOUSLY (118): disposed to, enaged in; rebellious

("Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering.")

Passage Study

"Far beneath them, the trees of the forest sighed, then roared. The hair on their foreheads fluttered and flames blew out sideways from the fire...Neither of the boys screamed but the grip of their arms tightened and their mouths grew peaked." (Narrator-106/107)

The imagination in the littluns remind me of my imagination I had when I was little. In the dark, anything that was hanging on a hanger, I automatically thought was a ghost. I don't blame Sam and Eric for thinking the dead figure for being the beast. They were just being the whimsical boys they should be.

Literary Device

"'Conch! Conch! shouted Jack, 'we don't need the conch anymore. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill or Walter? It's time some people knew they've got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us-'" (Jack-111)

If Jack would be running in the government, he would be a totalitarian. He would not like the idea of a democracy because it would mean the boys would have similar powers on the island and Jack being who he is, he likes to be in control.

"Yard by yard, puff by puff, over the boulders and red stones, till it lay huddled among the shattered rocks of the mountain-top" (Narrator-104)

IMAGERY  describing the fall of the dead parachuter.

"The leaves were roaring still." (Narrator-107)

ANTHROPOMORPHISM

"Soon the darkness was full of claws, full of the awful unknown and menace. (Narrator-107) HYBERBOLE

Reader's Response

I enjoyed the sense of teamwork the boys had, aside from their constant fights. Jack and Ralph led the boys and assured them they will go on an expedition as soon as possible to find the beast and I enjoyed that. There was a hope of friendship for Jack and Ralph, which leaves me thinking if they will put aside their differences and think alike for what is best for the other boys.
